Perry Valley Grange Exists to Serve
Perry Valley Grange has made a positive difference in the lives of several hundred persons these past few months by:
 Presenting four student awards for outstanding achievement in the FFA and vocational-technical curriculums at the Newport and Greenwood High Schools. Each award consisted of a $200 United States Savings Bond and a personalized engraved plaque.
 Raising and contributing $1757.35 to the local “Relay for Life” walkathon to benefit the work of the American Cancer Society. The funds were raised through a sale of Pampered Chef products, a bake sale at the Grange's June public dinner, sale of silk flower arrangements and direct donations made to sponsor walkers on the Grange team.
 Preparing and serving a free picnic for residents of the Perry Village nursing home in New Bloomfield, PA. Traditional homemade picnic foods were served outdoors on the home's covered terrace to approximately 35 delighted participants
Sponsoring a Deaf Essay and Poster Contest and educational assembly programs in two local elementary schools to encourage fourth and fith grade students to better understand the issues of deafness and the importance of hearing protection.
Presenting dictionaries on behalf of all Granges in Perry County to the third grade students in Newport and Greenwood Elementary Schools as part of the Grange's nationwide sponsorship of "Words for Thirds". which promotes the development of good reading habits and verbal comprehension
 Hosting several hundred people who participated in some part of the October Fall Fest, a free community event featuring both indoor and outdoor events for all ages.
 Sponsoring a benefit dinner that raised over $1600 for two local high School chapters of the FFA.
 Giving $500 to help a Grange family from Cumberland County whose home was completely destroyed by fire.
 Supporting recycling efforts by providing volunteers for the local recycling collection center for one day and serving a free appreciation dinner to volunteers who staff recycling programs in three local towns - Liverpool, Millerstown and Newport.
 Purchasing $500 of children's books for summer 2004 reading programs in the communities of Millerstown and Newport.
 Assembling and distributing 60 or more cheer baskets for needy and shut-ins of the community twice annually - originally at Thanksgiving and Easter but now done in February and August.
 Co-sponsoring an AARP Safe Driver Course in January and providing a free breakfast to the participants. The class was filled so quickly that a second class was scheduled for May, 2004. That class, too, filled within weeks and additional names are already on a waiting list for the next class planned for April 2005.
 Contributing $500 from the Grange's Emergency Fund to assist a community resident recover from a devastating fire that destroyed the family barn and many goats being raised for 4-H and FFA projects.
 Sponsoring a benefit Thanksgiving (2003) pie sale to raise funds for the facilities improvement of the Newport Senior Citizens Center. After weeks of preparation and several 14-hour days baking the 500+ pies needed to fill all the orders, the grange was able to make a $1,500 contribution to the Center in December.
  Preparing and serving about 125 free meals on Thanksgiving Day for those alone or in need on this holiday; about 50 meals were prepared for delivery or pick-up and another 75 persons gathered to eat a group meal held in the Grange Hall
