Deaf Essay & Poster Contest 2007
Just after the Christmas holidays, fourth and fifth grade students in the Newport and Greenwood Elementary Schools began writing and drawing to get their entries ready for the Grange's Essay and Poster Contests. The purpose of the contests is to promote awareness about the issues facing sight or hearing impaired and handicapped individuals and to encourage students to develop their writing and artistic abilities. The theme of both contests for 2007 was "Those Amazing Animals". Participants were encouraged to describe in their essay or show in a poster how animals trained as service or companion animals for persons with any type of disability help those persons lead independent lives. The first, second, and third place winners in each contest are submitted to the State Grange for judging at the state level. Perry Valley announced its winners at our March 9th Open House program with the students, their parents and teacher as our guests. Cash awards of $50 - first place, $30 - second place and $20 - third place were given to the winners from each school at local level. As part of this project, we are pleased to have been able to arrange for a unique assembly program to be presented in both elementary schools on Friday, March 30th. At each assembly, certificates are presented to all participants who entered an essay or poster in the contest. A story called "A Button in Her Eye" about a young girl with a hearing disability was read to the children by State Representative Mark Keller (Newport assembly) and Perry-Juniata Judge Kate Morrow (Greenwood assembly). Grange members and friends were invited to attend the assemblies at 10 AM (Newport) and 1 PM (Greenwood).
