Grange Receives Two FFA Awards
Perry Valley Grange's long-standing relationship with local FFA chapters was recognized recently
with the presentation of two awards - one local and one statewide.
During the Greenwood FFA's annual banquet held at the Grange Hall in late May, a surprised Grange president and vice president were called forward to receive a beautiful plaque in recognition of the on-going cooperation between the two groups.

Eisenhower Auditorium on the campus of the Pennsylvania State University in State College was the setting June 9th for an impressive awards ceremony at the annual summer conference of the Pennsylvania FFA. Nearly 1,000 FFA members, advisors and guests were on hand to see Perry Valley Grange No. 1804 of Millerstown, Perry County, receive one of the five official citations presented by the State FFA in recognition of outstanding support of FFA programs. Douglas Bonsall, Grange President, accepted the award on behalf of the organization.
The Newport and Greenwood High School FFA Chapters jointly nominated the local Grange for the award. The Grange for almost two decades has provided an annual award for the outstanding FFA student in both chapters. Recently, a mutually beneficial working relationship between the Grange and the Greenwood Chapter has been developed in which FFA members regularly volunteer to help with the Grange's large public dinners and, in turn, the Grange provides financial support for FFA projects. Last fall Greenwood students also organized a popular petting zoo at the Grange's overwhelmingly popular community Fall Fest.
The Perry Conservation District received one of the other citation awards for that group's sponsorship of FFA students to attend conservation training.
Grange member John Byers of Liverpool received an Honorary Keystone Degree at the same ceremony. Byers, a 1943 graduate of Millerstown High School, was a member of the original local FFA Chapter that disbanded in the late 1940's. His award was given for more than 60 years of active support of FFA ideals and his consistent promotion of the annual student livestock sale at the Perry County Fair.
The State FFA celebrated its 75th anniversary at the State College conference. Part of the festivities included the honoring of all past state FFA officers. Among those honored during a June 8th program was John Allen Hall of Millerstown, classmate of John Byers and State FFA Chaplain for 1942-43.
Darren Wood, president of the Greenwood FFA Chapter and of the Cumberland-Dauphin-Perry nine-chapter Area FFA, received the Emerging Agriculture Technology Proficiency Award at the conference for his three-year research project and was named the PA Agriscience Student of the Year. The subject of his study was the prevention of crop damage by the corn borer insect.

Greenwood High School FFA Advisor and Grange member Krista Pontius spearheaded the effort for the Greenwood and Newport FFA chapters to make a joint nomination of the Grange for this award in appreciation for the Grange's support of local FFA work. This is a wonderful recognition for and affirmation of our commitment to community service.
